The Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) is the only adult correctional centre in the ACT. It is a minimum to maximum correctional centre which accommodates detainees of all genders.
People detained at the AMC may be sentenced, or on remand waiting to be sentenced.
The Corrections Management Act 2007 provides the law that governs the treatment and management of detainees at the AMC.
The AMC is an open campus style design with units around a central facilities area. Accommodation includes:
- cell-blocks
- domestic style cottages
- a Crisis Support Unit
- a Management Unit
- a Transitional Release Centre.
The AMC includes the following environmentally sustainable features:
- 2.1 million litres of below ground fresh water storage
- grey water recycling for toilet flushing and irrigation
- solar hot water
- high grade building insulation.
