Register as a visitor
Learn how to register as a visitor to see a detainee at the Alexander Maconochie Centre.
The first time you visit the AMC you need to register as a visitor.
Please arrive at least 45 minutes ahead of your visit time to allow time for registration.
To register you, we will:
- establish your identity using the documents you bring us
- scan your eyes to create a secure identification method for your future visits.
You only need to register on your first visit.
Identification documents you need
For each person over 18, you need to bring:
- one primary identification document
- one secondary identification document.
If you are visiting with a person under the age of 18, you will also need to bring one document to confirm your guardianship of the child.
All identity documents must be valid, original copies. We cannot accept photocopies.
Primary identification documents
These documents are accepted as primary identification. Bring one of these documents for each adult.
Document | Description |

Driver licence | A driver licence with your photo issued in your name. This includes physical and digital driver licences, learner permits and provisional licences. |
Birth certificate | A full birth certificate in your name or former name issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages. We can’t accept birth extracts or birth cards. |
Passport | Issued in your name or former name, within 2 years of the expiry date. |
Proof of age card | Issued by a state or territory government in your name with your photo or signature. |
Student ID card | An ID card, issued in your name with your photo or signature. |
Secondary identification documents
These documents are accepted as secondary identification. Bring one of these documents for each adult.

Centrelink or Veterans’ Affairs card | A card issued in your name. |
Australian citizenship certificate | Issued in your name or former name. If your name appears on your parents’ certificate, you can use that. |
Security licence | A security protection industry or crowd control licence. It must be in your name and show your photo or signature. |
Consular identification card | Issued in your name by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade |
Rent or lease papers | Issued in your name. |
Australian marriage certificate | Issued by a state or territory government. We can’t accept ceremonial, church or celebrant issued certificates. |
Utility bill | Water, gas, electricity or phone account with a receipt number. This must be in your name, show your address and be less than 12 months old. |
Documents to confirm guardianship
Bring one of the following documents to confirm your guardianship of each child under the age of 18.
