Support if you experienced institutional child sexual abuse
The National Redress Scheme is for people who experienced child sexual abuse while in an institution. ACT Government institutions are part of the Redress Scheme.
The National Redress Scheme provides support to people who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse.
All ACT Government institutions are part of the Redress Scheme. The ACT Government is responsible for abuse that occurred in ACT Government institutions when the abuse occurred after self-government in 1989.
The Redress Scheme started on 1 July 2018. You need to apply for redress before 30 June 2027.
Who can apply for redress
If you experienced childhood sexual abuse when you were in the care of an institution, or when an institution was meant to be looking after you, you might be eligible for redress under the scheme.
What the redress scheme offers
The National Redress Scheme gives eligible people redress in 3 ways:
- access to counselling
- a payment of money
- a direct personal response (such as an apology) from the responsible institution.

Get support to apply
As part of your application for the National Redress Scheme, you will need to talk or write about what happened when you were sexually abused. Telling your story might impact on your mental and emotional health.
A Redress Support Service worker can help you fill in your application and provide you with support during the process.
