Funding to conserve and promote the heritage of the ACT

ACT Heritage Grants
This grant helps the community to:
- take care of and improve engagement with places and objects protected under the Heritage Act 2004, including those on the ACT Heritage Register and Aboriginal heritage places and objects.
- engage with our unique natural, First Nations, cultural and historic heritage.

Who this is for
The grant is for individuals, community groups and organisations.
What you get
Around $200,000 in total funding.

- an individual
- a community group
- an incorporated non-profit or private organisation.
Community organisations and lessees associated with ACT Government owned places or objects must apply with the relevant ACT Government agency.
What you can do
Funding priorities for 2026-27 focus on the conservation, interpretation, education and engagement related to places and objects protected under the Heritage Act 2004, including those on the ACT Heritage Register and Aboriginal heritage places and objects.
Funding priorities are:
- conservation works
- conservation management plans
- community engagement projects
- Aboriginal heritage engagement projects.
Examples of projects include:
- restoration and conservation projects
- conservation management plans
- Community engagement activities that promote awareness of local heritage
- oral histories
- digitisation and publications.
Before you apply
Check what you’ll need to apply
You may need to provide:
- written permission from the landowner if your project takes place on land not owned by you
- written support from the ACT Government if your project involves an ACT Government managed place or asset
- relevant heritage approvals or permits
- proof of public liability insurance.

- You can save your application as a draft and come back to work on it later
- Follow the instructions to complete your application
- Submit your application by 5pm 14 August 2026.
After you apply
We'll assess your application and let you know the result in around 8 weeks. You'll be notified by email.
Assessing your application
Your application will be assessed against the assessment criteria in the grant guidelines.
The assessment panel is made up of people with broad experience and qualifications covering:
- architecture
- archaeology
- natural and built conservation
- community engagement
- Aboriginal cultural heritage management.
If you get the grant
You'll need to sign a Deed of Grant with the ACT Government.
The Deed of Grant will include details on:
- the agreed project
- the grant amount
- the term of your project
- how to report on your project and expend the funds
- how to acquit your grant when you have completed the project.

Other heritage funding sources
ACTHeritage Emergency Fund
Applications must meet the funding priorities of the ACT Heritage Grants Program and have demonstrated urgency that precludes it from the annual ACT Heritage Grants Program.
Funding is provided for projects that:
- protect and conserve heritage places and objects under threat of imminent destruction
- respond to unforeseen events such as urgent repairs and/or conservation works
- focus on age and infirmity such as oral histories that capture important aspects of Canberra’s heritage.
Applications for the Emergency Fund are considered on a case-by-case basis, separate to the Heritage Grants Program’s main schedule.

Heritage Advisory Service
Free heritage and architectural advice is available for owners and prospective purchasers of registered buildings and places, including those within a heritage precinct. The Heritage Advisory Service provides one free hour for guidance on works, alternations and additions, including renovating or extending a heritage place.
