ACT Corrective Services data dashboards
This dashboard provides an overview of trends in the ACT custodial population. This information aims to support transparency and public understanding of ACT Corrective Services data.
You can find monthly data about the number and breakdown of detainees at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC). The AMC is the only adult correctional centre in the ACT.
Data are updated monthly, where available. It reflects activity up to and including the last completed calendar month.
If you have any feedback on the data below you can email actcs.research@act.gov.au.
Data highlights
The data highlights show the average number of people in custody for selected demographic groups.
The visual (below) shows a monthly summary of data on:
- the average custodial population
- receptions into custody
- releases from custody.
By default, the visual shows data for the most recent completed month.
The dashboard allows you to easily find data by:
- using navigation tabs at the top of the page to switch between receptions and releases
- using the comparison window to compare time periods
- filtering or changing by gender, Indigenous status or legal status.
This report uses data from the ACT Corrective Services Person‑Centred Data Model. It includes information up to and including the most recent full calendar month.
Understanding the data
- Average monthly population refers to the sum of the custodial population for each day of the month, divided by the number of days in that month.
- Remand refers to detainees in custody who have been refused bail and/or are awaiting sentencing by the court.
- Sentenced detainees are those who are carrying out their period of detention as ruled by the court.
- Receptions are detainees entering custody, including transfers from another jurisdiction. These are counted per event, not unique individual.
- Releases are detainees leaving custody, including transfers. These are counted per event, not unique individual.
Data notes
- Legal status shows whether a person in custody is unsentenced (on remand) or sentenced. This affects their rights, where they are held, and whether they can take part in programs or be released.
- Due to rounding, the average population numbers may not add up exactly to the total.
- If a person’s gender is unknown, it is recorded as “male” to protect privacy, following national counting rules.
- If a person’s Indigenous status is unknown, it is recorded as “non‑Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander,” following national counting rules.
- If a person’s legal status is unknown, it is recorded as “remand.” If a person has both a remand order and a sentence, they are recorded as “sentenced.”

Average population in ACT custody
The average monthly population shows how many people were held at the AMC on a typical day during the month. The custodial population changes every day as people enter and leave custody.
The average figure helps smooth out these daily changes so that trends can be more easily identified over time.
The visual below displays the average population over time for people in ACT custody. This can help identify longer‑term trends rather than short‑term fluctuations.
