2026 ACT non-government schools symposium
Education and Care Regulation and Support (ECRS) hosted the 2026 ACT Non-government Schools Symposium at the National Museum of Australia on 25 June 2026. The symposium focused on online safety and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education.
The ACT’s Registrar of Non-government Schools, Sean Moysey, opened the symposium by discussing the opportunities of online environments and AI, while emphasising the importance of managing risks to student, staff and community safety and wellbeing.
Kellie Britnell, Manager, Awareness and Capability, eSafety Commissioner, shared insights into emerging online safety trends and risks, along with practical resources for schools.
Dr Beth Chapman, University of Canberra, explored the implications of generative AI for teaching, learning and assessment.
The symposium concluded with a panel discussion on online safety and AI in schools. Panellists included Kellie Britnell; Dr Beth Chapman; Jenny Hanson, Assessment and Communications Officer, Office of the Board of Senior Secondary Studies; and ACT Non-government Schools National Online Safety Education Council (NOSEC) members Lachlan Ellis, Bronwyn Kerr and Sue Frawley.

25 July 2025 ACT non-government schools governance symposium
Education and Care Regulation and Support (ECRS) hosted the symposium.
It covered governance and leadership in the non-government school sector.
Sean Moysey, Registrar of ACT Non-government Schools and Executive Branch Manager of ECRS shared key findings about ACT school enrolment trends.
Adrienne Day, Director Day and Hodge Associates, shared her experience as a board chair of a non-government school. Adrienne provided practical advice and guidance to support schools to embed strong governance and understand their legal responsibilities.
Sarah Meier, General Counsel, Governance, Policy and Risk Manager at Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, discussed how this system navigated significant changes to governance. She discussed the links between stewardship and governance and the compliance obligations of school boards and leadership.
The symposium closed with an interactive panel discussion, fostering a dialogue about governance and leadership. This opportunity provided a platform for participants to exchange questions, opinions, knowledge, and ideas about governance and leadership responsibilities.
