Summary

The ACT Water Strategy sets the long‑term direction for how water is managed and valued across the Territory. It supports water security, protects and improves water quality and catchment health, and supports the development of a water‑smart community that values waterways and considers water in everyday decisions.

The Strategy focuses on:

  • integrated catchment management across the ACT and surrounding region
  • caring for water with traditional custodians
  • securing reliable water supplies for a growing population and a healthy environment
  • targeted investment in water security and catchment management where it is needed most
  • embedding integrated water cycle management into urban planning and design
  • delivering safe, clean and high‑quality water for the ACT community
  • promoting strong community involvement in water resource management.

Extensive consultation on the ACT Water Strategy was undertaken through workshops, surveys and the YourSay platform. A summary of feedback and outcomes is available in the listening report Refreshing the ACT Water Strategy 2014-44: Striking the Balance

The Office of Water has commenced developing an implementation plan for the refreshed ACT Water Strategy. The Plan will outline key enablers, specific actions, responsibilities, and delivery timeframes to support the refreshed Strategy’s outcomes. Until this plan is finalised, the current implementation plan remains in effect.
