About Birth of a Child Pilot Project

In Australia, over 300,000 babies are born each year, including about 6,000 in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Right now, new parents must fill out many forms and deal with several government agencies to register their baby and access services.

The Birth of a Child Project is a new initiative aimed at making this process easier. It will help parents by:

  • registering their baby's birth
  • enrolling the baby in Medicare
  • verifying the birth for other government benefits.

The ACT Government is working with Services Australia to improve this process through a pilot project. This includes better handling of birth notifications, registrations, and applications for services.
