An ACT Government Website

Summary

The ACT has experienced the fastest growing population of any jurisdiction over the last 10 years, growing from 370,000 to 455,000 people.

The Territory is expected to reach half a million residents by 2027. As Canberra's population grows, the government will invest in enabling infrastructure and seek to drive private sector investment into our renewal precincts, as well as new housing and commercial opportunities.

In 2019, the ACT Government developed a multi-decade infrastructure plan to address the growing needs and priorities for the city.

Since then, we have faced global circumstances such as COVID-19, economic changes, and resource accessibility. In response to this we are updating the plan.

The updated plan provides a framework for how the Government will renew established infrastructure and create new infrastructure to meet the needs of 500,000+ people. Included in this are:

  • new and modernised public schools
  • hospitals and community health facilities that provide effective, accessible care when and where people need it
  • modern, efficient public transport services
  • infrastructure to support climate action, energy and the environment
  • venues to develop a vibrant arts, sports and entertainment culture.

Infrastructure plays a crucial role in enabling well-being and is fundamental to making sure our city is an enjoyable and well resourced place to live.

The updated plan will continue to create and support local construction jobs across ACT in the coming years.

As we move into the future, priorities and investment decisions will be informed by changes in circumstances as our city and priorities evolve. Through careful planning now, the Government ongoing investment will make sure Canberra continues to thrive.

Project Pipeline

The ACT Government Infrastructure Pipeline is intended to show timing and indicative costs of future works. Inclusion of a project in the updated plan is not a commitment of ACT Government funding, but rather a proposal for consideration.
