Summary of Cabinet outcomes

As part of the ACT Government’s Open Government commitment, this document is a public summary of matters considered by Cabinet.  It is not intended to be a detailed set of minutes and does not cover all matters considered by Cabinet.  Among the matters not covered are materials considered in the formation of the ACT budget, commercial and industrial matters under negotiation as well as matters that would impact personal privacy, security and the ACT economy.  Nothing in this document can be considered a waiver of the Government’s executive privilege.

Eastern Broadacre Planning Study – Future Development and Outcomes from Community Consultation

The Eastern Broadacre Planning Study identified areas that may be suitable for development in the future for employment purposes.  Cabinet was presented with the outcomes of community consultation on the Planning Study. Cabinet also considered the future direction of the planning program covering Eastern Broadacre. Government Response to the Public Advocate inquiry into the Residential Care Placement for Children and Young People

Cabinet agreed the Government’s response to the Public Advocate’s inquiry into the Residential Care Placement for Children and Young People. The response agrees in full to three of the five recommendations with the remaining two recommendations agreed in part.

Freedom of Information Amendment Bill 2011

Cabinet agreed to amend the Freedom of Information Act.  The amendments improve public accessibility to information held by the Government.

Amending the Act reinforces the Government’s commitment to Open Government, and enhances the capacity for members of the public to participate in the governing process.

Planning and Building Legislation Amendment Bill (No 2) 2011

Cabinet agreed to introduce the Planning and Building Legislation Amendment Bill (No 2) 2011.  The Bill makes minor policy and consequential amendments across six legislative instruments relating to the planning portfolio, and delivers two key outcomes:

Pre Development Application consultation – formalising the requirement that proponents of large scale developments consult with the community ahead of lodging a Development Application; and

Signs on blocks for building work – provides for a sign about future building work to be erected on site in a number of circumstances including developments that are exempt from development approval and where work is being undertaken by a licensed builder that requires a building approval.

National ICT Australia (NICTA)

Cabinet noted funding previously provided to NICTA by the ACT Government and NICTA’s achievements in Canberra.  In particular, Cabinet noted NICTA’s Research Lab which continues to attract world-class researchers and leads excellent research, scholarship and training programs.
