Summary

The Canberra-Nara sister city relationship began in 1993, thanks to the efforts of individuals like Father Tony Glynn. He was an Australian priest who lived in Nara after WWII.

This relationship started with school exchanges and has grown to include cultural, sporting, and professional ties.

The official proclamation was signed by Chief Minister Rosemary Follett and it was formalised in 1994 by Nara’s Mayor Yasunori Ohkawa.

Highlights include:

  • the creation of Canberra-Nara Park in 1999
  • the annual Candle Festival.
