About the Advisory Group

The ACT Government is committed to improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQA+ people in the ACT.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQA+ Advisory Group was formed through the Capital of Equality Strategy 2024-2029.

We support the functions of the Advisory Group through the Office of LGBTIQA+ Affairs.

What we do

The Advisory Group was formed to identify culturally appropriate solutions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQA+ people.

To provide this advice the Advisory Group ran a co-design process.

The Office of LGBTIQA+ Affairs in partnership with the LGBTIQA+ Health Policy team supported the Advisory Group to complete the co-design.

On 9 July 2026, the Advisory Group released their report, For Us, By Us: Culturally-led Solutions for Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander SBLGBTIQA+ People.

The report has 72 recommendations for the ACT Government and community services. The recommendations are grouped under 7 themes. The themes are:

  • For us, by us: supporting self-determination
  • Data, research and evaluation
  • Visibility and recognition
  • Social and community connections
  • Culturally safe supports and services
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Safety and justice.

From July 2026 the Advisory Group will give advice to the government on how to implement these recommendations.
