Restorative justice policy reform
Summary
The ACT Government is progressing several initiatives to support the accessibility and strength of restorative justice in the ACT.
The Centre for Innovative Justice (CIJ) at RMIT University are an independent research and reform organisation focused on innovative ways to improve the legal system. They are completing:
- a review of the ACT Restorative Justice Scheme and Crimes (Restorative Justice) Act 2004
- research into alternative civil and restorative justice regimes in response to recommendation 13 of the Listen. Take action to prevent, believe and heal Report.
The review and research will be delivered to the ACT Government in the last quarter of 2025.
The Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) completed an evaluation of Phase Three of the ACT’s Restorative Justice Scheme. Phase Three expanded restorative justice conferencing to include domestic, family and sexual violence matters.
The upcoming review of the scheme, together with the AIC evaluation, will provide a comprehensive and independent assessment of the ACT’s Restorative Justice Scheme.
