An ACT Government Website

Perinatal deaths are deaths that occur at or after 20 weeks gestation. Data on perinatal deaths in the ACT dates back to 2001.

The ACT Perinatal and Maternal Mortality Committee:

  • reviews perinatal deaths in the ACT
  • contributes to the national perinatal mortality dataset held by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare
  • provides neonatal mortality data to the ACT Children and Young People Death Review Committee
  • classifies perinatal deaths.

What the data collection includes

We classify perinatal deaths using the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand (PSANZ) perinatal mortality classification system.

The system includes:

  • a perinatal death classification (PSANZ-PDC)
  • a neonatal death classification (PSANZ-NDC).

How we collect data

We collect data using the ACT Confidential Report on Perinatal Death Form [PDF 890 KB]. The form includes placental pathology and autopsy details.
