Working in youth justice

The Bimberi Youth Justice Centre employs youth workers to work with centre residents. They offer support, supervision and deliver restorative programs. This guidance and support help residents to start preparing for life outside the facility.

They offer a range of services to address the diverse needs and interests of the centre’s young people. These programs and services help the young people to:

  • develop strong links to their family and community
  • address the drivers of offending behaviours
  • assist their transition from the centre.

Noa’s story

Noa has worked at Bimberi since 2023.

Noa has always had a passion to work with young people. He said Bimberi was a perfect opportunity to make a difference:

As cliché as it sounds, working here is about really just trying to make a difference in someone's life. A lot of these kids have a lifetime of experiences already - and they’re really young - and so I’m just trying to make a difference in their lives where I can. I really love my job.

George’s story

George has been working at Bimberi since 1999 – that’s more than 26 years!

We asked George what inspired him to come and work in youth justice:

I always wanted to work with young people to help them rehabilitate and reintegrate back to the community soon as possible. I love my job. And sometimes there can be ups and downs, but you have to believe in what you're doing in your job. The most rewarding part is when you see young people get a job, and they do the right thing.

The Bimberi Youth Justice Centre facility

Bimberi Youth Justice Centre is the ACT’s only youth detention facility. It provides 24-hour safe and secure custody for young people between the ages of 12 and 21 years who are remanded in custody or sentenced by the ACT Childrens or Supreme Courts.

Built in 2008, Bimberi is a purpose-built facility designed to achieve the best for young people in custody. It facilitates rehabilitation and promotes the reintegration of young people into the community through a range of programs and services.

Bimberi was the first youth justice facility in Australia to operate within the framework of human rights legislation.
