Northside Hospital project

Funding: $1.34 billion

The Northside Hospital project is the ACT Government’s largest investment in a health infrastructure project.

It will deliver a modern hospital to support Canberra’s growing community and future health needs.

Current updates

Early works to prepare the site for main construction started in May 2026 and will continue until late 2027.
North Canberra Hospital will remain open and fully operational during early works.
Targeted consultation on the final design will begin in late 2026.
Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) will relocate to a new facility in Erindale as part of the project. Read about the CAMHS relocation.

The new Northside Hospital will be built on the existing campus in Bruce and operated by Canberra Health Services.

A new 7 storey clinical services building will mark the first stage of redevelopment, supporting more modern and efficient healthcare for the ACT.

A modern emergency department, including a dedicated area for children
More than 700 additional car parking spaces
A new 100 place childcare centre
A new 14 bed intensive care unit (ICU)
A maternity area, including a Birth Centre, 6 birthing suites, inpatient rooms and a special care nursery
8 operating theatres
2 endoscopy suites
More than 200 inpatient beds
Larger outpatient areas to support clinics, specialist services and allied health care.

The ACT Government is working closely with health professionals, users and community groups to ensure the new hospital meets future needs.

There will be ongoing opportunities to provide feedback on the hospital’s design throughout 2026.
