Design changes

Changes that have been made to the design of the Molonglo River Bridge

The detailed design has been completed. There have been some changes to the original design.

  • The Molonglo Group Centre will be reclassified as a town centre. This meant design changes were needed to meet the criteria for a town centre.
  • Design changes were made to increase public safety. These included removing the on-road cycle path and creation of a shared user off-road cycle path and the widening of the shared use path on the bridge.
  • Further environmental studies were carried out. These led to better outcomes including improving connectivity for the pink tail worm lizards within the river reserve.
  • The bridge was originally designed to be 227.5 metres long. It will now be 200 metres long. This is due to the realignment of the bridge across the Molonglo River.
  • There will now be 2 signalised intersections instead of 5. The extra 3 signalised intersections will be delivered by the Suburban Land Agency (SLA) as part of their works in the Molonglo Town Centre. These are subject to planning approvals.
  • On-road cycle lanes are no longer part of this project. This is consistent with the SLA’s approach in the Molonglo Town Centre. Instead, a walking and cycling path will be built in both directions on the bridge, with off-road cycle lanes designed on the John Gorton Drive approaches.
  • The design now includes two queue jump bus lanes. The first is northbound and located at the intersection adjacent to the Molonglo Town Centre. The second is southbound and located at Sculthorpe Avenue.
