What we do

Civil and Regulatory Law Branch

The Civil and Regulatory Law Branch implements policy and legislation relating to general civil and commercial law, including:

  • administrative law
  • consumer law
  • property law
  • liquor, gaming and racing regulation
  • tribunal and courts legislation
  • retirement villages legislation
  • residential tenancies legislation.

We also undertake legal assistance planning, including administering funding for community legal centres and Legal Aid.

Criminal Law Branch

The Criminal Law Branch develops legislation relating to criminal law including:

  • forensic procedures
  • family violence
  • terrorism laws
  • firearms
  • sentencing
  • bail
  • criminal offences
  • victims of crime
  • concepts of criminal responsibility
  • police powers.

Human Rights Branch

The Human Rights Branch advises on policy and law reform and administers initiatives related to human rights, anti-discrimination, births, deaths and marriages registration, surrogacy, guardianship, victims of crime, redress scheme, disability justice, justice reform and restorative justice.

We are responsible for:

  • human rights
  • privacy
  • discrimination
  • strategy related to disability in the ACT justice system
  • victims of crime policy
  • designing and implementing of the Restorative Justice Service
  • National Redress Scheme.
