An ACT Government Website

The ACT Healthy Waterways Program runs projects around the region to improve the quality of our lakes and rivers, particularly the Murrumbidgee River. The projects provide innovative ways to make sure our water is clean and healthy, and we use our water systems efficiently.

Infrastructure projects

Clean water is better for swimming and playing, and it gives our animals and plants a home, too. It also makes our environment cooler and helps us learn about our First Nations heritage.

The infrastructure projects involve building things like wetlands, ponds, and rain gardens so that water and rainwater can support our plants and wildlife. The project also includes:

  • research trials
  • teaching the community about water
  • improving how we check the quality of water.

The project started by selecting 500 places in the ACT. We then selected which ones would result in the cleanest water, most efficiently. After talking to the community in August 2016, we chose 36 projects to prioritise.

Changes to projects

During the planning, we found some issues with that would make it hard to clean the water. There were also some issues with the cost. The community's thoughts also helped decide which projects to change or not go ahead with.

Added projects

The following projects were added from the reserve list:

  • waterway restoration upstream of the Queanbeyan and Molonglo Rivers, Oaks estate
  • wetland at the corner of Ginninderra Drive and Copland Drive, Evatt
  • waterway restoration at Tattersalls Cres, Florey
  • waterway restoration at McCulloch St and Cotter Rd, Curtin
