Government Response E-PET-081-25 and PET-042-26 – Light Rail extension to Mawson petition

Cabinet agreed for the Minister for Transport lodge a Government Response to E-PET-081-25 and PET-042-26 with the Clerk of the Assembly.

The Stage 2B project (Commonwealth Park to Woden) will positively impact the Access and Connectivity, Social Connection and Environment and Climate wellbeing domains by improving public transport infrastructure and integration. It will enhance equitable access to services, reduce reliance on private vehicles, and support emissions reduction goals. The project is expected to benefit a broad cross-section of the Canberra community, including future generations, by fostering inclusive urban development and climate resilience. Cross-portfolio collaboration has been central to its development, with anticipated indirect benefits to health, safety and economic participation.

Climate Change Strategy – 2026 - 2035

Cabinet agreed to release of ACT Climate Change Strategy 2026 – 2035: Overarching Framework and ACT Climate Change Strategy Action Plan 1.

The ACT Climate Change Strategy 2026-2035: Overarching Framework and Action Plan 1 has direct impacts on the ACT’s climate response and consequently all sectors of the economy. The Framework and Action Plan 1 addresses adaptation and mitigation priorities that support the ongoing wellbeing of the ACT across all domains.

Community Services reform and progressing Government commitments

Cabinet agreed that the ACT Government is progressing community services reform including relevant government commitments in partnership with the NGO sector.

Consideration of improved approaches for identifying community needs and development through human services commissioning incorporates the wellbeing indicators as a core component informing decision making under the framework. It has potential to positively impact all wellbeing domains.

The Federation Funding Agreement will support longer-term productivity in housing delivery including for social and affordable housing projects.

Petition E-PET-038-26 and PET-052-26 - Reject the Curtin Presbytery development

Cabinet agreed to the response to petitions E-PET-038-26 and PET-052-26 regarding the redevelopment of the Curtin Presbytery be provided to the Clerk of the Assembly for tabling in the ACT Legislative Assembly.

The Government response will have no direct wellbeing impacts. However, the development proposal is subject to a statutory assessment process in accordance with the Planning Act 2023. Impacts from the proposal will be considered by the independent Territory Planning Authority through the development application assessment process.
