Arts and culture
Arts and culture can connect people with ideas, emotions and stories.
Arts and culture impact on wellbeing
This measure reflects the percentage of people who have attended either free or paid in-person live events or festivals within the past 12 months. This is important as attendance at even one arts event a year can improve wellbeing by:
- creating an environment that projects public support for arts
- facilitating positive interactions with friends, family and the wider community
- being a form of stress-relief and escapism
- contributing to social cohesion.
In 2022, 76.8% of Canberrans attended an in-person arts event. People less likely to attend were those:
- living with a disability
- households earning under $40,000
- aged 55 years and over.
This is a new measure on the dashboard, previously identified as being under development. The National Arts Participation Survey is conducted approximately every 3 years.

This includes completion of the main survey and state, and territory boosts of 500 responses each for ACT, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. The survey is conducted approximately every three years.
