Canberrans value connection with people around them.
Being close with others lessens loneliness and encourages resilience, especially when dealing with events that disrupt our lives. Connecting with others and having people to rely on improves our sense of safety and our feelings of identity and belonging.
Living in a city that supports how we engage in suitable activities and spaces is important. We also value belonging to local community clubs, teams, community groups and churches. Having the choice to engage with others on a personal or social level remains important.
The social connection domain includes measures that target these concepts:
- self-rated sense of social connection
- levels of loneliness
- rates of volunteering
- participation in community events and activities, including arts, culture and sport.
