Access to justice and restorative practice

A fair justice system is accessible and deals with matters in a reasonable, expeditious manner. Our justice system also provides free and accessible pathways for restorative justice conferencing to seek to address harm caused by offending and repair relationships damaged by crime.

Percentage of civil cases finalised - ACT Supreme Court

This measure shows the percentage of civil matters finalised in the ACT Supreme Court within 12 months of lodgement.

Timeliness is vital in a fair and accessible justice system.

In 2024-25, 56% of civil cases were finalised within 12 months of lodgement.

Over time, these results have decreased. In a court with a small number of judicial officers, the business of the court must be balanced between criminal, civil and court of appeal. Increases in one jurisdiction mean decreases in the other so the listing periods are adjusted to reflect these fluctuations.

The Court is seeing an increase in complexity in all jurisdictions but particularly in the criminal jurisdiction. The increase in complexity of criminal matters, the number of trial days and late pleas reduce available listing days for timely hearings and can impact clearance rates, particularly in a small court. These negatively impact the ability of the court to finalise matters within 12 months.
