Victims of crime

Being a victim of crime can have a significant impact on individual and community wellbeing.

‘Crime victimisation’ is an indicator of the government objective to contribute to a safe and secure community that enables people to undertake their lawful pursuits confidently and safely.

Victimisation rate of personal crime

This measure shows the rate of people who were victims of personal crime per 100,000 population. This is important because being a victim of crime can have a big impact on individual and community wellbeing.

In 2022-23, ACT Policing recorded 934 offences against people (per 100,000 population). This is an increase compared to 2021-2022.

In the last 12 months the number of people reporting being the victim of personal crime has increased.

This may be due to increased community awareness of family violence, leading to an increase in reporting. It may also relate to the easing of COVID-19 related restrictions on venues.

This measure shows the number of offences against the person reported to or becoming known to ACT Policing per 100,000 population.

Victimisation rate of property crime

This measure shows the rate of property offences per 100,000 population. This is important because being a victim of crime can have a big impact on individual and community wellbeing.

In 2022-23, ACT Policing recorded 3,333.6 offences against property per 100,000 population.

Over the previous five years, rates of property crime have decreased apart from a slight increase in 2021-22.

People working from home may have helped reduce the rate of burglary and property offences.

Property offences include, but are not limited to, robbery, burglary, motor vehicle thefts, property damage and other offences against property (including fraud, traffic, drug and weapon offences and other offences not elsewhere classified).
