Community Safety Policy and Programs
What we do
We work across governments and with the community to progress:
- security
- emergency management
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy
- community safety policies and programs.
We work in partnership with stakeholders and provide coordination support across the ACT Government in response to security and emergency incidents and to progress strategic justice policies and programs.
Security Branch
Leads, advises and coordinates the ACT Government’s protective and national security arrangements, including:
- National security
- Counter-terrorism
- Countering violent extremism
- Protective security, including safer public places
- Critical infrastructure
- National committees
- The ACT Public Safety CCTV network.
Emergency Management Branch
Leads whole of government, all-hazards strategic emergency management policy and disaster recovery, including:
- Resilience and recovery
- Australian Government funding programs
- Strategic emergency prevention, planning, response and recovery policy matters
Justice Transformation and Community Safety Branch
Provides high level strategic policy advice on community safety reform initiatives including:
- reducing recidivism and justice reinvestment
- managing the contract with ACT Policing
- over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the justice system
- Board of Inquiry into deaths in custody at the Alexandar Maconochie Centre
ACT National Firearms Register Program
Coordinates and manages the ACT NFR program, coordinating workstreams and providing secretariat support to governance groups.
