Possums
The Common Brushtail Possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) is often seen living in cities and suburbs. They’re protected under the Nature Conservation Act 2014.
This marsupial is about the size of a domestic cat. It has silver-grey fur and a white to pale-grey belly. Males have a reddish chest, which is tinted by a scent gland. Its ears are long and oval-shaped and its tail is long, black and bushy. The bottom of their tails are bare, which helps them to grip branches.
Possums often are seen on the ground, but they prefer the safety of trees. They're nocturnal animals, so they sleep during the day and come out to feed at night.
They like to eat fruit and common garden plants such as rosebuds. They also forage for fruit and vegetable scraps found in compost heaps.
Possums in your home
Sometimes possums find their way into people’s home. They usually live in tree hollows, but also seek suitable dark places such as the space between the ceiling and roof of houses and garages.
You can encourage possums out of your home by giving them an alternate shelter. You can build nesting boxes, or other forms of shelters. It should be waterproof and placed 4-5 m above the ground.
Removing possums
It's illegal for an unauthorised person to trap or harm possums. Trapping, removing or killing a possum without a licence will result in severe penalties.
Don't attempt to look after sick or injured wildlife if you're not a licensed and trained ACT Wildlife Carer.
If you find a deceased possum follow the advice on the Recyclopaedia webpage.
If a possum has moved into your home, try blocking the entry point when the possum is out feeding.
If you can’t do this, contact a licenced possum removal company. They will help remove the possum and identify any entry points.
