The ACT provides free public hospital emergency care to people who are seriously ill or injured and need urgent treatment or life-saving care. In the ACT, there are 2 public hospital EDs – one at Canberra Hospital and the other at North Canberra Hospital. EDs are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Elective surgery or planned surgery are surgeries that are booked in advance. Elective surgery is provided by Canberra Health Services at Canberra Hospital, North Canberra Hospital, and a number of private hospitals on behalf of Canberra Health Services.

Admitted patient care refers to episodes of care in which a patient is formally admitted to an ACT public hospital to receive treatment and/or care. The types of care provided include acute care, newborn care, mental health care, rehabilitation care, palliative care, rehabilitation care, psychogeriatric care, geriatric evaluation and management, and maintenance care.

Nurse-led WiCs provide free health care for non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses to anyone over one year of age. WiCs are part of the national network of Medicare Urgent Care Clinics, providing more health services and care options for Canberrans. Patients requiring urgent attention for serious injury or illness are directed to EDs.

The safety and quality of healthcare provided to patients is measured in a number of ways. This domain includes information on compliance with nationally recognised prevention and control practices, and the results of patient experience surveys.
