Where is Budjan Galindji Offset Area?

Budjan Galindji (20.0 Ha) is situated in the northern suburb of Franklin. It is located on the corner of Wells Station Road and Flemington Road. Access to the reserve is currently through pedestrian access gates to the North and West of the reserve.

Why is it an offset?

Budjan Galindji has conservation objectives concerning Matters of National Environmental Significance (MNES), protected under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Specifically:

Ngunnawal Country and People

Budjan Galindji Offset Area is located on Ngunnawal Country, an ancient and diverse landscape managed by Ngunnawal people for tens of thousands of years. For time immemorial Ngunnawal people have maintained a tangible and intangible cultural, social, environmental, spiritual, and economic connection to these lands and waters.

The Heritage Act 2004 makes particular provision for recognising, registering and conserving Aboriginal places and objects. Under the Act it is an offence to damage, disturb or destroy any Aboriginal place or object. Find out more about the protection of Aboriginal places and objects.

European heritage

The site has historically been used for stock grazing under rural lease for many years. In the early 2000's the land remained undeveloped while the suburbs of Franklin and Harrison were constructed. The site is now managed by the ACT Government as an environmental offset. Occasionally, portions of the Budjan Galindji site are grazed by cattle for herbage mass control.
