European Heritage Recovery Response

Initial response

Thanks to our fire crews, many heritage sites were saved from the worst bushfire and flood damage. There are 13 heritage-registered huts located in the burnt areas. The 2 huts with major damaged were Demandering, and Max and Bert Oldfields huts. This damage caused the huts to collapse.

Ongoing efforts

After the fires, the recovery efforts focused on protecting European heritage, including to:

  • assess the damaged huts and decide what to do next
  • check containment lines and earthwork sites for archaeological evidence
  • fix up containment lines and other earthwork sites
  • put up temporary protective fencing around impacted sites.
