Summary

The Corrections Management Act 2007 sets out how the management of detainees should contribute to a safe, just and democratic society. In particular by:

  • ensuring justice, security and good order at correctional centres
  • ensuring that harm suffered by victims and their need for protection, are considered appropriately in making decisions about the management of offenders
  • promoting the rehabilitation of offenders and their reintegration into society
  • ensuring that detainees are treated in a decent, humane and just way.

Policies, procedures and publications

ACT Corrective Services uses policies and procedures to ensure legal compliance. They also assist with consistent and quality service delivery.

Policies and procedures related to the management of detainees made under the Corrections Management Act 2007 are notifiable instruments and are available on the ACT Legislation Register.

Some policies and procedures are excluded from public access. This occurs when disclosure is likely to endanger public safety or undermine justice, security or good order at a correctional centre.
