Braddon Place Plan

Braddon Place Making

Braddon is one of Canberra’s most eclectic suburbs. It has evolved over the past decade from being a light industrial area into a vibrant precinct with a gritty urban character and a mix of new apartments, great places to eat, and innovative people and businesses.

In 2019 the City Renewal Authority released a place plan to guide improvements to public spaces to help shape and strengthen Braddon’s identity.

The Braddon Place Plan was created in collaboration with the local community, identifies the place’s unique character and sets out actions to make it even better. It includes short, medium and long-term actions for government, businesses, landowners and the community to improve the experience of Braddon and further strengthen its popularity.

Through creating streets where people want to dwell rather than pass through, we want to benefit local business, increase employment in the precinct and attract commercial investment.

The Authority worked with the creative placemaking team from Right Angle Studio to create a plan that builds upon this already vibrant neighbourhood.

Right Angle Studio engaged with a broad range of stakeholders that brought diverse and important perspectives. They connected with the active group of local traders, as well as a broader audience through short-term activations. They investigated the needs, aspirations and priorities of those groups to evolve a place strategy that is sustainable into the future.

The resulting Braddon Place Plan is evidence based, action-oriented and co-ordinated.

It contains short-term actions, like installations, activations and minor public-realm improvements to enhance the physical and social aspects of Braddon’s already established identity.

The plan also contains longer-term actions, designs and strategies for public-realm improvements and placemaking activities that will further enhance Braddon as a destination precinct.
