Alinga and Cooyong Street improvements

Alinga and Cooyong Street improvements

We are planning to better connect the City Centre with businesses and residents in City West, the Australian National University, Braddon and public transport routes.

Our goal is to make it safer and easier for residents, workers and visitors to move around Alinga and Cooyong Streets. This includes pedestrians, cyclists, those who use light rail and the bus network.

It is about creating public spaces that encourage people to visit and stay longer – increasing social connection and supporting local businesses.

We will begin site investigation in early 2024 to learn more about the area to inform the masterplans for the project. The site investigations will have minimal impact on those who regularly use the area and the broader Canberra community.

Alinga Street

The Alinga Street project will deliver improved east-west connections between the Alinga Street light rail station and Marcus Clarke Street.

This includes supporting pedestrians and active transport users, as well as integrating with current and future light rail and bus operations.

Cooyong Street

The Cooyong Street project involves developing ideas and actions for improving north-south pedestrian connections between the City Centre and Braddon.

This will build on our Braddon streetscape upgrades and it will invite more people to explore the precinct's bars, restaurants and retail shops, as well as nearby Haig Park.
