Experiment: 'Festival of the Forest' (Winter Festival)

A bright spot of warmth near the end of a cold winter, the Festival of the Forest event will celebrate the beauty of seasonal change with music, performances, activities and food, including rituals from the diverse cultural communities of Canberra. Activities may include fireside stories and a community lantern making.

Place plan theme: Cultural Program

Date: Saturday 24 August, 1-7pm

Location: Park area between Northbourne Avenue and Torrens Street

Observation: Haig Park has a reputation for being dark, cold and unsafe; this is intensified over winter. There are few authentic winter time events on the Canberra calendar. The park lends itself to community events that would foster improved perception and use of the Park, but few occur.

Hypothesis: A winter themed event that challenges preconceptions and embraces wintertime could lay new foundations for evolving perceptions of Haig Park and piloting a concept for a new annual event.

Favourable outcome: Strong attendance and participation from a diverse audience. Positive feedback from attendees who are encouraged to visit the Park more as a result of the event.

We would love to get your feedback on this experiment. Have YourSay and help to improve Haig Park.
