We’ve developed a Concept Masterplan for improvements to Cooyong Street to make it safer and easier for residents, workers and visitors to move around, come together and relax.
The project focuses on creating a modern city street that balances the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users and vehicles, while strengthening Cooyong Street’s role as a key north–south connection between the City Centre and Braddon.
It aims to encourage people to visit and stay longer by improving comfort, safety and amenity, supporting stronger social connections and local business activity.
The project will build on the Braddon streetscape upgrade and connect with the Garden City Cycleway, inviting more people to explore shops, cafes and restaurants.
The Cooyong Street upgrade is part of our Better City Streets initiative, which outlines the range of social, health and economic benefits of pedestrian-friendly streets.
This includes features that make public spaces easier to move around and more enjoyable to spend time in. This creates opportunities for local shops and, in turn, a more attractive and exciting City Centre for all.

Thank you to those who provided feedback on proposed improvements to Cooyong Street during the consultation period from November 2024 - February 2025.
Feedback highlighted strong support for improved pedestrian safety, better cycling connections and greener streets, alongside concerns about traffic movement, parking and construction impacts.
In response, the final Concept Masterplan includes refinements to balance movement needs, improve safety at key crossings, strengthen links to the Garden City Cycleway and ensure improvements can be delivered in a staged and coordinated way. A listening report has been published to the YourSay Conversations website.
In the 2026-27 budget, the ACT Government announced funding for detailed design to deliver initial stages of the Cooyong Street upgrade.
